Back Pain - is it punishment from God?

A friend of mine asked me to write a blog about Back pain and is it a punishment from God?  We often think of God as being a very loving God, and He is! Romans 5:8 - He loved us while we were yet in sin!  John 3:16 - He gave us His only son to be the redeemer and deliverer from sin!  Are we then tempted of God through illness and pain?  No, it says in James 1:13 - Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man. So, we know that God cannot or does not tempt anyone.  However, evil can tempt us and does on a daily basis.  Could it be that we suffer from past iniquity from generations ago?  Numbers 14:18 17"But now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, 18The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.' 19"Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."
I think since Christ came to redeem and deliver us, he also has redeemed generations past.  Up until the new testament they did not have a Savior.  What would have been the purpose for Christ to die on the Cross had he not covered it all?  1 John 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
No then lets get down to the real question, does God punish us and cause back pain and perhaps other health issues?

It does say in scripture that our God is also our father for those of us that follow and believe in Him.  Because he is our father he will also discipline us for incorrect behavior, out of safety and out of love.  Just like human fathers whom love their children, they will discipline their children out of love for them.  Proverbs 3:12 11My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD Or loathe His reproof, 12For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.  Hebrews 12:6 5and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM; 6FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES."7It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?… Revelations 3:19 18I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.19'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. 20'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.…

I think all of us must answer this question personally.  if you are a child of God, He will let you know through His Holy Spirit, through His word and through the word of others.  While your determining whether your pain is from God, here are also some things to consider written by a Jewish Women's column:
Second, take a moment to reflect on what your back pain could indicate for your spiritual growth. Here are some ideas:
  • Be more flexible and less rigid.
  • Be more humble and less arrogant.
  • Support others more.
  • Surround yourself with more supportive people.
  • Be more decisive (have more backbone).
  • Keep your commitments and be more honest in business.
  • Relax and don’t see life as a burden.
  • Let go of past hurts (stop carrying them around with you).
  • Relinquish control. (Lets us remember that if we belong to Him, He is in control.  It only requires trust!) Just give Him control!
  • Repent - Because forgiveness and healing doesn't take place without repentance
  • He does and can still perform miracles - Seek His Kingdom first - Matthew 6:33
  • Our God is a healing God - Psalms 30:2, Proverbs 4:20-22, Psalms 107:19-21, Exodus 23:25, John 8:1-30
Yes, think about what resonant s in you!
